Predictably David Carter has been elected the new Speaker (Standing Orders 15 to 25) after the position was vacated by Lockwood Smith today and a vacancy announced by the Clerk. There were two nominations announced at 2pm. The vote was split between Carter and Labour’s nominee Trevor Mallard put forward to express the Opposition’s annoyance at a lack of consultation from the Key Government. Mallard’s nomination means he is now officially a lame duck and on the way out for any future Labour Cabinet roles.
- Carter 62
- Mallard 52
